The Listening Switch

The Listening Switch

Listening really well is a vital part of empathy but it's also something that's quite hard to do!

On Empathy Day 2020 and 2021, we thought about how we can all get better at listening 100%. Authors, Jo Cotterill and Robin Stevens show us exactly how to do that in the video below. And Jacqueline Wilson shared her top tips for being a really good empathetic listener.

Turn on your Listening Switch

Ask a friend or a member of your family to think of something that happened recently that made them feel an emotion. It doesn’t have to be a big event. Ask them to try and think of something other than happy or sad.

Now show them the picture of the light switch and tell them to imagine they have a “listening switch” in their heads. Switching it on will mean they will listen with empathy.

Ask your friend or family member to tell you their story about the event and emotion. You need to listen 100%! When they've finished telling you about what happened to them, check that you have understood how they felt. 'So you felt... because...?

Then swap and see if your friend or family member can also turn on their listening switch and really listen to you.

When you've both had a go, explore how being listened to felt: how did it make you feel to be listened to very carefully? Did your friend or family member understand your feelings? How do you know? How often do you listen to people with your empathy switch? Might you use it more? What problems could be solved if people used their empathy switches more?

The power of listening

Make some time in the day to read The Rabbit Listened by Cori Doerrfeld

A fabulous picture book from our 2020 Read for Empathy Collection, helping us – at any age – to reflect on the power of listening (and the things not to do!)

You can listen to Cori reading the book aloud here.

Do you need to be listened to today?

Good empathic listening needs to happen all the time, not just on Empathy Day. Perhaps you're feeling anxious or worried. Or maybe you want to let everyone know how relieved and happy you feel about something.

If you need some really good listening from a friend or family member, then why not download one of our Empathy Listening Vouchers for an empathy listening session?

If you haven't got a printer, you can design your own!
