Our Affiliate Schools programme develops and embeds empathy as a core skill, value and practice across your school community. Alongside better empathy skills, other outcomes include improvements in reading for pleasure, wellbeing & active citizenship. 

 

Based on research, evidence-informed and highly practical, the programme is delivered in three phases. Each includes core training, a rich resource bank and a community of practice supported by experts, partner academics, authors and illustrators.

  • PHASE 1: Laying the foundations - £600

    You will gain:

    • A deep understanding across the school of the research base for empathy education 
    • knowledge of what empathy is, and isn’t, and how books build it
    • knowledge of core empathy-building book practices and the connection between empathy and reading for pleasure 
    • a grasp of the programme’s resources for use in classrooms, across the school and in homes to develop empathy skills through reading
    • an understanding of how an empathy education can support pupil wellbeing, active citizenship and more positive attitudes towards reading.

    What this phase includes:

    3 hours of core training covering:

    • What empathy is and how it works
    • why empathy matters in education and beyond
    • why and how reading builds empathy
    • empathy-building book practices

    Rich resource bank including:

    • staff training materials
    • academic and teacher video content
    • booklists and storykits
    • assembly materials
    • age-differentiated lesson materials to teach about empathy
    • key practice guidance materials
    • creative and immersive teaching resources

  • PHASE 2: A focus on empathy skills - £475

    You will gain:

    • a deep understanding across the school of how to develop three discrete empathy skills: building a language for emotions, perspective-taking and empathic communication.
    • knowledge of a range of practices and supporting resources for use in classrooms, across the school and in homes to develop the target empathy skills through reading

    What this phase includes:


    3 hours of core training covering:

    • the science of emotions
    • how to build a language for emotions
    • perspective taking
    • developing empathic communication skills, especially listening

    Rich resource bank including:

    • staff training materials
    • author videos for use in the classroom
    • booklists and storykits
    • creative and immersive teaching resources
    • pupil-led tools

  • PHASE 3: Putting empathy into action - £475

    You will gain:

    • a clear focus on developing the fourth empathy skill in our framework – pro-social attitudes and behaviour.
    • a deep understanding across the school of the empathy principles underpinning social justice and social action
    • knowledge of books which inspire social action 
    • practical tools for social action 
    • ideas for continuing your empathy journey

    What this phase includes:

    3 hours of core training covering:

    • involving the wider community 
    • developing pupil-led action  
    • the principles of social justice 
    • developing social action 
    • exploration of how books can inspire social action  
    • ways to embed empathy practices in the school 

    Rich resource bank including: 

    • booklists and storykits encouraging social action 
    • creative and immersive teaching resources 
    • templates for practical activities,  
    • case studies and suggestions for social action projects
